Original Photograph from which portrait was done               finished horse portrait

Original Photograph        Ink & Watercolor Horse Portrait

I  have been a full-time professional artist specializing in animal portraits for about 20 years.   A typical piece will take three or four days to complete, although the work is not continuous due to the need to let each layer of watercolor dry.  I am usually working on 2-3 pieces at any one time.  Large composite pieces can take a week or more to complete. Portraits are based on clear, detailed photographs.  I work in a combination of  pen and ink and watercolor.  This combination is probably the most time consuming medium and is perhaps the most unforgiving (one wrong ink line and I may have to start over) but it also gives the most detail ( from the ink work) and depth (due to the multiple layers of watercolor added over the ink). For more information on the process read the FAQ.

Portraits are not matted or framed. If you wish, I can make your horse portrait into note cards, and other unique items featuring your horse's portrait.  I can also do composite portraits of multiple animals and also do special backgrounds and small alternate pose insets on your horse portrait.  Many of my customers come from referrals from previous clients or from my web site but I do travel to shows from time to time so if you want to meet me in person you can check my schedule.
